Recursion was built on the premise that decoding biology requires large scale fit-for-purpose ML datasets and that large models trained on such datasets would allow us to decode biology.
In 2023, we saw an opportunity to build such a model. We were challenged to Show Ben Mabey the Model! We initiated Project Seldon (named after Hari Seldon of Isaac Assimov's Foundation). This would be the world's first and largest phenomics foundation model of biology. And... Guess what?! We Delivered.
In May of 2023, we moved into HQW, welcomed Altitude Lab to the Gateway and unveiled our showcase. We will never get tired of breaking out the big scissors!!
We acquired Cyclica & Valence Discovery and welcomed more than 600 new Recursionauts to the team! The acquisitions of Cyclica and Valence add amazing capabilities in digital chemistry and AI. Our powers combine!!!! To form a greater and more powerful TechBio superteam!!
We officially opened our office in Toronto on Queen Street in June. The outdoor event got rained out but we made it work inside!
At the start of the year, Bob reminded us that if he’s capable of the “impossible,” we are too!
80 Recursionauts joined us at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Toronto to learn about our mission, values, founding principles and connect with one another ♥️
BEE-YOU! Recursion joined the Pride Parade with BioHive for the first time,
celebrating our LGBTQ+ community at Recursion, Biohive, and beyond. 🐝🌈
We threw a party to officially dedicate HQE to Dean Li, HQW to Anne Carpenter and our Chemistry Lab to Chris’ 8th grade science teacher, Pongi. We all cried during Carol’s speech.
Go big or go home. We officially launched Recursion’s ML research engine, Valence Labs at ICML in Honolulu, HawaiI by hosting a lunch & panel session. It was a full house with more than 200 attendees!
