2021 was “the year of the map”. The year that we pushed to fully transition from brute force screens to using our maps of biology for 100% of our internal programs. This was a major turning point in our approach! It was indeed a radical transformation that would be pivotal on our path to Decoding Biology.
But, how do you fuel such a significant shift? Well, we got ourselves a supercomputer. Yes, you heard it right! We welcomed into our folds, the powerhouse we affectionately named Biohive-1. 2021 marked the beginning of our journey to master the art of harnessing its potential. We plunged head-first into the world of setting it up, training models, and then put those models to work in service of our mission — building MOAR maps to Decode Biology!
Build the Map. Follow the Map. Serve Patients. Let's continue to push the boundaries of what's possible, together.
Dean’s lucky shoe made it to the party!
In April 2021, we went public. It was the fastest and one of the largest IPOs ever in our space. Because we were largely locked down still, we had the amazing opportunity to remotely push the opening button from our headquarters.
From our living rooms to kitchens, Recursionauts at home were glued to their screens for this climactic moment. It wasn't just an IPO; it was a milestone in our exciting journey to change the way the world thinks about drug discovery.
Essential onsite facilities and lab-cursionauts masked, tested, proximity traced, and worked extremely diligently to keep our mission moving forward. The rest of us worked from home to keep ourselves and our colleagues safe. In May, we did a soft open of the office. Here we are, starting up onsite All-Hands again. Through all of the churn of balancing safety with Covid surges, masking, testing, and distancing - we continued to make progress towards our ambition.
To give our efforts a boost, we’ve got some serious investments in hardware, tooling (you know, the ML Ops stuff), data generation, you name it.
We’ve got a supercomputer! Our very own BioHive-1 will help us train and work on models faster than ever, using all our data. It’s like having the entire school year’s notes the night before the final exam.
Nothing says, let's map biology like an octopus riding a narwhal... doing science!
We've got 300 Recursionauts in the mix! Celebrating milestones in HTF with treats? Yes please!
We opened our onsite daycare in partnership with Bright Horizons. Opening the daycare was more than just constructing a playground, it was us standing by our hardworking team members and their families, providing them the support they deserve, especially mothers! It’s also just cute as hell to see the little ones right next door.
Our partnerships fuel our mission and we have some good ones! In 2021, we launched into a massive partnership with Bayer. It's definitely massive.

Instead of a Winter Party in 2021, we stayed home and had a special guest, Astronaut Chris Hadfield. He spoke to us about the determination and leadership it takes to achieve greatness.
“Life off Earth is in two important respects not at all unworldly: you can choose to focus on the surprises and pleasures, or the frustrations. And you can choose to appreciate the smallest scraps of experience, the everyday moments, or to value only the grandest, most stirring ones.”
― Chris Hadfield
