In 2018, we were catching our stride & eager to grow the team (at the time, 80 people). It was time to move out of our beloved Komas office and on to the next chapter, by October we would be in our brand new office at the Gateway! We broke ground and set to work on building what is now Recursion’s permanent HQ (and what was then, Dick’s Sporting Goods)
There was trepidation - could we still go back to Komas to have meetings? We were so sweet and had so much ahead of us!
We moved to our new headquarters in October 2018. The Gateway played a slideshow of our cell pics to celebrate our arrival 🎉
So much went right in the HQ move! We had more space, meeting rooms galore, and lots of great perks and amenities.
There was an HVAC issue when we first moved into the new HQ (it’s complicated to both keep a laboratory at a stable temperature AND make sure that humans are the temperature they want to be at their desks.) We were all working with blankets and jackets until it was resolved.
Here’s JD, a software engineer warming himself by the dumpster fire of unprocessed experiment data.
Here’s the whole team, proud of our new space and community at the Gateway! At the end of 2018, we had 125 Recursionauts working to decode biology to radically improve lives. We commemorated our move into HQ with a family photo ❣️
One of our favorite Slack channels was established in 2018 — #outside-recursion, where we share outdoor adventures of all kinds and connect over SLC’s beauty. This helps remind us that not only are we Recursionauts inside the walls of our HQ (or home offices) but wherever we adventure, including conquering Mt. Olympus for the 4th year in a row.
A photo of the team, holding the photo of the team, holding the photo of the team... holding a... you get it. It's Recursive and it shows us how far we have come as we grow and grow.
Up until 2018, all of our processing and analysis happened on a single server that was physically located in a hall closet in Research Park at the University of Utah - in the hallway outside of our first office. We kept it there when we moved to the Komas location and IT would periodically go up and check on it. We named it Golgi and it was a serious single point of failure as we grew. We had a big initiative to get off of Golgi, moving our processing and storage into the cloud. Once it was complete, we held a death of Golgi party, complete with executioner (John Merrill) and Golgi piñata
We got our first GPUs, which allow us to process our imaging work. This milestone marks the official beginning of our quest run our own hardware to scale our compute along with our data!
Fan favorite Trivia at All-Hands!
In this one, we played
“Which Ben Is It?”
The Date Science team got into a habit of playing One Night Werewolf. There’s always been a strong board game culture here. What can we say? We love puzzles and collaboration! (see #boardgames in Slack, est. 2018)
